What Is Cholera?

Cholera is an infectious disease that causes severe watery diarrhea. This leads to dehydration  and even death if untreated. It is caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated with a bacterium called Vibrio cholerae.

Five cases have been identified by the Central Health Laboratories in Hoima and Kyegegwa. Four cases have been confirmed in Hoima and only one is confirmed in Kyegegwa as of yet.

Cholera treatment centres are being put around the refugee camps by the ministry of health to help diagnosis the deadly disease.

A sum of 535 suspected cases with 22 deaths had been reported from Kyangwali refugee settlement with 360 people discharged on Thursday 22nd February 2018.

In a statement from the ministry, it says that most of the deaths occurred along the way or in the community. In Kyaka II, 23 suspected cases are being followed up.
