18-Year-Old Student Drowns In Lake Bunyonyi

Kabale District Marine police is searching for the body of an 18-year-old student who drowned in Lake Bunyonyi. The student, known as Promise Ahumuza studied at Buhumba Foundation College.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate said the deceased happened to be a resident of Kashenyi village in Kamuganguzi sub-county, Kabale district.

She drowned in Lake Bunyonyi on Monday morning. This was after the local canoe they were traveling in together with her father and sister capsized.

It is alleged that the canoe that had been filled with sweet potatoes started to fill with water due to strong winds.

The others in the canoe, the deceased’s dad Christopher Kaganga and a sister to Promise, narrowly escaped death. They apparently held onto the canoe until rescue came.

According to Elly Maate, Kigezi Region police spokesperson the police and other locals have tried to search in vain.

He further advised the public to always use water safety precautions of putting on life jackets whenever they are on the water to avoid such incidents.

Swimming pools are specifically designed for people who know how to swim, but unfortunately many die in water while trying.
