5 Common Signs You’re Intimidated By Your Employer

You may feel that you are confident and capable of standing up for yourself. But, it is surprising how many employees are intimidated by their employer and don’t realize it. The problem is that the person doing the intimidating wants to control the other person. It is a form of bullying.

Unfortunately, it can sometimes be difficult to differentiate between intimidation and simply telling you what you should be doing. It is time to evaluate your workplace and see if you are displaying any of the five common signs that show you are intimidated by your employer.

If you display any of these signs it is worth talking to an unfair dismissal lawyer, they can advise regarding the best way forward.

  1. Always Doing It Their Way

Once you have worked for a company for a while you will almost certainly have ideas regarding how things can be done better. However, if you frequently make suggestions but always end up doing it the way your employer wants, then you are being intimidated.

It doesn’t matter why they say their way is better, the truth is they are overriding your opinion.

  1. You Are Ignored

One of the easiest ways to unsettle an employee is to ignore them. This leaves you unsure if you are doing a good job, bad job, or what will happen next.

Employers that ignore you are intimidating you, and they are doing it in a way that is unlikely to be detected.

  1. Move The Goals

If you find that the goalposts are always moving, preventing you from ever achieving what you want, then you have an intimidating boss. They are making sure that you cannot reach the goals or succeed, effectively telling you that they are superior to you.

This can also be achieved by always being vague concerning what needs to be done, making it impossible for you to get it right.

  1. Interruptions

You will feel pleased when they invite you to a meeting to discuss your opinions. But, if you are constantly interrupted and they talk over you they are not really interested in your opinions, instead, they are going through the motions.

  1. Secrets

Employees that encourage secrets in the workplace and specifically exclude individuals are intimidating you and getting your colleagues to help. It is usually done by planning events and making sure you don’t know about them until afterward.

This sows unrest and discontent in the workplace, often a great way of persuading specific people to look for an alternate job.

Final Thoughts

Don’t forget, being intimidated by your employer is not about you being weak-minded. It is all about your employer abusing their position to feel important. Recognizing this is the first stage to dealing with it.

If you have an HR dept. you can speak to them. If not, you should go over your employer or simply confront them. It is surprising what recognizing their actions can accomplish.
