74% Of NGOs In Karamoja Are Non-Existent

There is a total of 340 international and national organizations purportedly operation in Uganda’s poorest region Karamoja.

However, out of all of these NGOs, we can not trace 252(accounting for 74%) of them on the ground.

In a Friday interview, Richard Omoding, the executive director of Riamiriam Civil Society Network revealed these stats.

Riamiriam Civil Society is an organization that monitors the activities of the civil society organizations in Karamoja sub region.

This came a day after the local community in Moroto chased away officials from an NOG on Thursday. They were chases away after trying to claim some activities implemented by other development partners.

Apparently they were trying to impress EU ambassadors who were touring development projects there.

Omoding said they carried out a mapping exercise this year which concluded in April. He explained to the URN that during this exercise, they managed to record physical addresses of only 88 development partners.

He said this included both international and national NGOs operating in the region.

‘’Sometimes we get shocked when we see organizations running to Karamoja whenever big officials come to Karamoja yet they can’t be traced,’’ Omoding said.

He advised development partners to register with the Riamiriam to avoid duplication and further humiliation like those in Moroto.
