Police reports emerging from Masaka indicate that a total of 14 people travelling in a taxi on Masaka-Mbarara road have perished in an accident.

The taxi got crashed on impact when it smashed into a trailer killing all 14 people in it. The accident shattered the growing dreams of three teenagers, snatched the productive lives of three youth, and claimed a septuagenarian.

Two other people died aged 36 and 49, a prime age for productivity and providence to their families and the society.

The driver of the doomed taxi was identified as 49-year-old Deo Kwese, aka Moses Magero. Police said the taxi smashed into a trailer that it reportedly tried to overtake from a blind spot on the highway. The scene of this accident is one of the known blackspots in the area.

One of the witnesses said the crash at first sounded like a deafening crash heard from a distance. Then a moment of silence in the early morning downpour followed.

Crowds attracted by the loud crash rushed to the scene of the accident with the hope of rescuing some survivors. This, however, did not happen as most of those involved had instantly died.

Personal items were found scattered

Personal items such as shoes, bags, wallets, and keys belonging to the victims were found scattered all over the place.

Some witnesses said the accident happened as a speeding bus headed to Mbarara overtook the trailer. This forced the trailer driver to ram into the oncoming taxi. The trailer driver thereafter swerved off the highway and plunged into a nearby valley.

The driver of the trailer and another unidentified person sustained injuries and are the only survivors of the accident.

However, Masaka-Mbarara road is know for killing motorists. Hundreds have perished om this road in the last 10 years.
