Alur Community Demand Nyapiri Cultural Day Celebrations On Uganda Calendar

The Alur Community are demanding  for immediate gazetting of Nyapiri cultural Day celebrations on Uganda Calendar.

Prime Minister Hon Vincent Ochaya says this will boost tourism to the community and contribute towards education of the young generation.

“We demand government through Ministry of Tourism to gazatte a day for Nyapiri cultural day to be celebrated every 18th February. Its historical day in Alur community where the community recognize and remember the great historical cultural leader Nyapiri history,” Ochaya said.

Ochaya made the submission to government at the launch of a book titled: Mitigating the impact of climate change on Uganda’s cultural heritage in the Rwenzori and Alur sub region at Uganda Meseum.

The research was conducted by The Cross Cultural Foundation of Uganda a Non Governmental Organisation promoting heritage and cultures as key aspect of development.

Ochaya pledged to formally write to Ministry of tourism, Gender Ministry and Uganda Tourism Board to actualize and support to formalize the cultural day celebrations.

He also asked Uganda Wild Life Authority to donate a buffalo for cultural day celebration next year as they plan massive exhibition and inauguration of Nyapiri Cultural day celebrations in 2022.

Commissioner for culture in the  Gender Ministry Noame Juliana  urged other  civil society organisations to promote cultural values and implement government programmes to alleviate poverty in society.

 Brief about  Alur commnity

Alur people are an ethnic group who live mainly in the Nebbi, Zombo, and Arua districts in northwestern Uganda, but also in North eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, north of Lake Albert. They are part of the larger Luo group, and their language is closely related to Acholi. Some Alur speak Lendu.

The Alur Chiefdom is probably the only one that was unaffected by the Ugandan ban on traditional monarchies in 1966.

In DRC, the Alur people are organized in dfferent chiefdoms namely; Angal ,Alur Juganda, Jukoth, Mukambu, Junam,

In Angal, the current Chief is called Ubimo Djalore Serge II. He took over from his late father Kamanda who died in 1998
