Asuman Basalirwa; Government Deliberately Excluded Parliament From The COVID-19 Lockdown Planning

Opposition politician and MP for Bugiri, Asuman Basalirwa has come out to show his disappointment in the way the government handled the COVID-19 situation.

He said the government deliberately excluded parliament in the second lockdown measures.

A few weeks ago, the President after meeting with the national COVID-19 task force and the Ministry of Health, declared a 42-day lockdown. The lockdown quickly paralysed economic activities in the country since many people could no longer access their work places.

The government through the Prime Minister’s office came up with a strategy to bail out a number of people.  They dispatched a fee of Ugx 100,000 to those people electronically. This exercise officially ended last week.

Basalirwa though said that this is a short term measure and now the government should look at the exit strategy.

“Each one of us is asking about the exit strategy. Government deliberately excluded Parliament from the processes this time around.” The MP said while appearing on the NBS Morning Breeze program.

The MP also thanked the Prime Minister for instituting the Parliamentary COVID-19 task force.

He said that the committee had helped to reveal interesting facts about the health sector in the country. He went ahead to say that the government now has to intensify the sensitization program.

Basalirwa said that the government has to make sure that the vaccines and right information is available. He added that the solution to the pandemic is sensitization and making sure people follow the SOP’s.

“We must make sure vaccines are available and the right information is available. We have information that some health workers are at the forefront of de-campaigning the vaccines.” Asuman Basalirwa added.

Speaking about the Ugx 100,000 COVID 19 relief fund, Basalirwa requested the PM to publish a list of those people who got the money. This is because they are receiving numerous calls from different people saying they did not get the money.
