Australia’s Longest Coronavirus Lockdown Shows Positive Results

The state at the center of Australia’s longest coronavirus lockdown has gone almost a month without registering any new case. This is an enviable record as USA and many other European countries grapple with surging infections or renewed lockdown. The US recorded the highest number of cases in one day last month.

Australia saw one of the world’s longest and strictest stay-at-home coronavirus lockdown which enabled the country to crush community transmission. This coronavirus lockdown came after a daily peak of about 700 cases in early August.

This achievement will enable Australia be among the few European countries to look forward to Christmas with less restrictions. Restrictions will be eased on family gatherings in what authorities are calling a Covid-normal summer.

The 28-day run is an extraordinary achievement psychologically and practically in terms of opening up the economy. However, there’s no room for complacency according to Sanjaya Senanayake, an Australian Physician. He said this implying that Australia faces a risk of the virus resurgence from overseas travelers – despite a mandatory system of hotel quarantine.

‘’The reality is, no matter how careful people are, there can always be that accidental breach or a breach where you can’t even identify the source,’’ Senanayake said.

On Aussies planning to return home;

Over 30,000 Australians living in the U.S. and in Europe where the virus is rampant, are waiting to return home. Security at quarantine hotels was tight including guards sleeping in the guest rooms with the guests. This saw the virus escape into the community through the guards hence forcing the 3-month lockdown.

The Victoria government remains wary despite the 28 days without any mystery case of the coronavirus.
