Best Casino Movies Based On True Stories

Watching casino movies can be thrilling because they involve risk-taking and plenty of action. When watching some of the following movies, it is hard to believe that they are inspired by true stories. In most of them, the directors use a good blend of fact and fiction to create some highly entertaining scenes.

Casino (1995)

One of the best casino movies based on a true story is the movie Casino. Directed by Martin Scorsese, it is based on the true story of Frank Rosenthal. He was a casino executive who ran multiple Las Vegas casinos. Sam “Ace” Rothstein (Robert De Niro) is the mob-affiliated casino executive in the movie. It follows Frank’s connection with the criminal world through his best friend Anthony, a mobster from Chicago.

The two men ran four unlicensed casinos. Due to their links to organized crime, it was considered too risky to try and get one. These days, when playing games of chance at a physical facility or online casino games, it is imperative to choose a licensed casino. Gambling at unlicensed casinos is risky and a recipe for losing money.

21 (2006)

The movie 21 follows a group of MIT students who use their mathematical abilities to count cards. Set in the era before online casino slots became so popular, the movie tells the tale of how a math professor (Kevin Spacey) trained some talented MIT students to count cards. They applied their card-counting skills in some of the major casinos on the Las Vegas strip.

You wouldn’t believe this thrilling story of trickery and betrayal if it hadn’t really happened. The movie is based on a book called “Bringing Down the House” and the true story of the MIT blackjack team. This group of MIT students and alumni employed their card-counting techniques in the 1980s and 1990s and won millions of dollars. When the casino operators retaliate, the plot gets even more intriguing.

Molly’s Game (2017)

Molly’s Game is based on former Olympic-class skier, Molly Bloom, who suffers an injury. She starts organizing big underground poker games. After running into trouble, she moves to New York. The hotel games she organizes attract celebrities, businessmen, and athletes.

Performances by Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, and Jessica Chastain will keep viewers entertained. This is not strictly a casino movie, but it explores the gambling world as it depicts Molly’s rise and fall in the underground poker world. The FBI and Russian mobsters add some extra entertainment to the movie.

Uncut Gems (2019)

If you’re looking for one of the best movies on Netflix featuring Adam Sandler, try Uncut Gems. This movie is loosely based on stories from directors Josh and Benny Safdie’s father who worked as a runner in the diamond district. It follows the story of Howard Ratner, a gambling addict, who wants to retrieve a pricey gem he bought to cover his debts. He needs to balance business, adversaries, and family in pursuit of the ultimate win.

Ratner wants to place a six-way parlay bet on a playoff match between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers. The bet would have paid off but his brother-in-law stops him from placing it. He also doesn’t receive a payout for another three-way parlay bet that would have netted him over $1.2 million in winnings. Watch the movie to find out why.
