Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny – Dollo Apologizes To The Kabaka Of Buganda

Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny-Dollo has come out to apologize to the Kabaka of Buganda and Buganda as a whole following his remarks last week.

Through a statement released on Monday, Dollo described his comments as ‘wrong and inappropriate.’

Many deemed the statements which caused an uproar on social media and especially among the Baganda as tribalistic.

Many have been calling for an apology from the Chief Justice whereas some called for his resignation.

The Chief Justice said that he retracts his statements and will hand in an apology to the Kingdom.

“I made a wrong and inappropriate reference to His Majesty the Kabaka of Buganda. I hereby unequivocally, unreservedly and of my free volition, wholly retract that reference and also hereby tender my apology to His Majesty, the Kabaka,” Dollo said in a statement.

“I’ll immediately hereafter communicate to the Katikkiro of Buganda in writing, registering this apology,” he added.

During the vigil of the late speaker Hon Jacob Oulanyah, the CJ went on an outburst condemning the protests carried out by a section of people in Seattle where the late speaker was being hospitalized.

Mr Owiny-Dollo questioned why these same protests were not held when the Kabaka was flown to Germany for treatment. He added that they flew the Kabaka using a presidential jet and public funds.

According to Dollo, they could have done this because Oulanyah was not a Muganda. He further accused Baganda of hypocrisy and tribalism.

Further, he added that if opinion leaders don’t come out to condemn the rising intolerant politicians in Buganda, the region is likely to fall into an abyss.

However, he received widespread criticism. Many wondered how he had come to a conclusion that the people who protested in Seattle were from Buganda.

Buganda through the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga came out to refute these claims. Through a statement, the Kingdom said that the Kabaka never used the presidential jet but rather a private chartered flight of KLM airlines.
