Farmers Have Launched A Manifesto

Farmers have launched a manifesto demanding forth coming government and political leaders to consider them in the next five years to boost food production.

About 72% of population is engaged directly into farming as sour e of livelihood.

According to Aijuka Prudence policy and membership manager from Uganda National farmers federation says agriculturers want water for production, access to quality agricultural I puts, agriculture extension services  and access to finance  addressed to boost their production.

“In this farmers manifesto, we demand forth coming government address water for production be prioritized and  in puts  like seeds, pesticides and fertilizers accessible to agriculturers. Most of seeds and agro chemicals in the market are fake and the law is weak on enforcement, “Aijuka said.

“We also demand agriculture bank increase access to finance to agriculturers at low Interest,”she added.

Agriculture minister Vincent Ssempijja launched the farmers manifesto under theme:a strong farmers voice, transforming the society.

In other news earlier published by NEWSLEXPOINT.com, agriculturers had demanded for special financial facility to boost agriculture sector. Speaking at this years joint agricultural sector annual review meeting under the theme: Sustainable Agro industrialization for wealth creation in Kampala, they argued that financial credit given to agriculturers by commercial banks is expensive and the terms are unfriendly to farmers.

“There is still a limit in financing agricultural value chain. Commercial banks, microfinance institutions and Saccos have shifted to commercial financing with lending rate  at 12%. This is typically unfavorable to agriculturers,” Uganda National Farmers Federation boss Kenneth Katungi said.

UNFFE is the the umbrella farmers association that brings together 118 farmers organization. Its membership is about 3 million agriculturers mainly small holder farmers.

Katungi however stressed that for Uganda to realize sustainable Agro industrialization for wealth creation, government has to quickly move to  implement new national development plan iii. He says it’s very clear on the road map for Agro industrialization.
