Fire Outbreak Leaves 11 Children Dead At School Of The Blind In Mukono District

The police has revealed that eleven people, including children have been killed in a fire outbreak in Mukono. This happened at a school in a rural community in Ntenjeru Kisoga town in Mukono district.

The police director for Fire and Rescue Services, AIGP Joseph Mugisa confirmed the incident. He revealed that the fire which happened at Salama School of the Blind broke out at about midnight.

According to Mr. Mugisa, a number of other children sustained injuries and about six of them are in a critical condition. They are however admitted at Herona Hospital in Kisoga.

He adds that the cause of the fire is still unknown but they have begun investigations to determine the origin of the fire.

“A tragic accident has occurred in Mukono at a school of the blind some time after midnight. Unfortunately 11 children perished in that fire so far with a number of them injured. Investigations are on the ground and the fire was put off,” Mugisa said.

Fire incidents at schools have been a cause of concern for education officials in the East African country.

In seperate incident earlier this year, police reported a school fire outbreak at Bilal secondary school in Bwaise which gutted dormitories of students leading to losses of valuable property for hundreds of students.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Police Spokesman Luke Owoyesigyire said that the fire started when the students were attending preps. In the better news, however, he revealed that no student got injured or lost life during the outbreak.
