Recently released bodycam footage depicts the disturbing scene of New York correction officers fatally beating a handcuffed inmate, leading to his death the following day.

The inmate, identified as 43-year-old Robert Brooks, tragically passed away on December 10th, a day after the incident occurred at the Marcy Correctional Facility in upstate New York.

After an internal review, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York swiftly took action by ordering the dismissal of 13 officers and a prison nurse involved in the assault on Robert Brooks.

Additionally, the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James has initiated an investigation into the inmate’s untimely death, prompted by the distressing bodycam footage that has left many questioning the circumstances surrounding Brooks’ demise.

Unveiling the brutality

The released footage, made public by Attorney General James, reveals a series of violent acts against Brooks, including repeated strikes to his face and groin while he was restrained on an examination table.

Preliminary findings attributed Brooks’ cause of death to “asphyxia due to compression of the neck,” sparking outrage and demands for justice among the public and advocacy groups.

In response to the distressing revelations, Attorney General James emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in releasing the video footage to the public.

The legal representative for the Brooks family condemned the violent attack, stressing the need for a safe environment within correctional facilities.
