Government To Compensate Some Victims From The Bobi Wine Protests

President Museveni said the government will compensate some of the victims of the Bobi Wine protests which broke out recently. During his Sunday evening address to the nation, President Museveni said the government will investigate and compensate accordingly.

The government will compensate the families of the deceased who were not in the protests.

“Government will compensate all those who were not rioters but lost lives in the protests. After due process, the government will compensate for the loss of lives and property if it can be verified but not the rioters,’’ Museveni said during his address.

He also revealed the death toll due to the riots which he said was 54 people who died during the protests.

Quoting a report from the Criminal Investigations Director, AIGP Grace Akullo, Museveni said 32 of the 54 dead were rioters. He said these 32 were killed instantly during confrontations with security agencies and the police. He then said the others were unfortunately hit by stray bullets. The other two victims were knocked by a car after the driver lost control after being hit with stones.

Further claims

Museveni claimed that the protesters used the chance that the police went soft on them and caused havoc. He, however, noted that this will never happen again due to the robust security forces in the country.

Museveni sternly warned politicians whom he says think they are untouchable when they violate the law. He said these things should end with the previous protests. Or else the law will deal with those they catch on the wrong side henceforth.

Museveni said it is wrong for leaders to keep on risking the lives of citizens to the dangers of the virus through holding mass gatherings. He says this is in complete disregard of the guidelines put in place by the government.
