High Covid-19 Test Costs Mess Business Up At Katuna Border Point

The number of buses, passengers and traders at Katuna border in Kabale has drastically fallen due to high costs of Covid-19 testing. The 7th March 2022 saw the reopening of the border for passengers to resume travels between Uganda and Rwanda. After three years of closure, a passenger bus belonging to Volcano Bus company in Rwanda crossed to Uganda.

A recent survey has revealed that passengers and buses crossing via this particular point have shifted business to Mirama Hills one-stop border. This has been attributed to the hiked price of PCR testing and delay in the release of test results.

Apparently, testing one person costs shs100,000 and the results take up to one and a half hours to be released. However, information from Mirama hill one-stop border shows the rate of testing is at shs30,000 and it takes only 30 minutes to get the results.

Many have called for a reduction on testing charges at Katuna border point to enable resumption of business operations.

Another issue is that since the reopening of the border, Rwanda has never cleared anything from Uganda to enter Rwanda. This has apparently affected businesses like hotels which are not operating anymore and there isn’t money changing anymore as well.
