HISTORIC: William Ruto Declared Winner Of Kenya Presidential Elections

According to the latest information coming in, the IEBC, the body responsible for holding elections in Kenya, William Ruto has been declared as the new president of Kenya in a tightly contested election.

Ruto polled 7,176,141 votes giving him a percentage of 50.49% which gave him a slight win over government backed Raila Odinga. Odinga who was contesting for the fifth time polled 6,942,930 votes which gave him a percentage of 48.85%.

This makes Ruto the self-styled ‘Hustler’ the fifth president of the Republic of Kenya since the country got independence in 1962.

The other presidential candidates included George Wajackoyah, a prominent lawyer in Kenya and David Mwaure Waihiga who conceded defeat even before the election was still being tallied.

This announcement however comes at a time after violence broke out at the main tally center in Bomas of Kenya.

Four IEBC members took to a press conference at Nairobi Serena Hotel to disown these results that were yet to officially be announced.

These were led by the IEBC vice chairman Juliana. She said that they disagreed with how the last phase of the elections was handled.

“We cannot take ownership of the result that is going to be announced because of the opaque nature of this last phase of the general election…” – Juliana Cherera, Vice Chair IEBC.

Talking about the election shortly after being declared the winner, Ruto said that there are no losers in this election.

According to Ruto, the people of Kenya have won and the deserved winner has come out on top. Ruto also said that the IEBC has been the hero of this election.

“In this election, there are no losers. The people of Kenya have won. The hero of this election is the IEBC.’ – William Ruto, Kenya’s President-elect.

Meanwhile Raila Odinga’s chief agent Saitabao Ole Kanchory claimed that IEBC officials had committed electoral offenses and should be arrested.

For now, the mood in Kenya remains tense despite the election being declared over.
