Judiciary To Deal With Accumulated Number Of Cases Within A Year

Greater Masaka Judicial officials have decided on a 1-year ultimatum for clearing a pile of cases that have accumulated to 1,328 cases. Some of these cases have been in court for over six years in addition to the 2,130 cases pending a hearing.

Masaka resident judge Victoria Nakintu Katamba said at a Tuesday judicial meeting that causes of the backlog include transferring judges, lost files, among others.

“What we did, we counted all files in the High Court in their categories such as civil, criminal and others and assimilated them with the court case administration system,” Ms Katamba said.

She noted that plea-bargain, criminal and juvenile sessions, and mediation have helped them to reduce the cases. She however gave reassurance that by around March 2023, they will have 0 cases.

What attracted this meeting is the Masaka High Court Circuit. This comprises of four magisterial areas including Masaka, Kalangala, Sembabule and Rakai districts.

According to Masaka Chief Magistrate Sylvia Nvannungi, the move to increase judicial officers will yield good results. This will benefit both the the Judiciary and public.

Ms Norah Mirembe Matovu represents the Uganda Law Society on the  Judicial  Service Commission. She applauded the newly appointed judges for the work done in reducing case backlog in Masaka Sub-region.

In October 2021, the case backlog had been blamed on the delayed police investigation.
