Kadaga Supports The Extension of Office Term From 5-7 Years

The Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga has defended the extension of tenure of office of both Members of Parliament and local Council leaders from five to seven years arguing it enable political leaders fulfil their pledge to the electorates.

Officiating the the end of year party for Members of Parliament, the speaker also warned all legislators against the repercussions of continuously breaching the rules of Procedure of parliament.

The 10th Parliament whose tenure according to the contract signed between them and the electorates was supposed to end by the year 2021 but with the Wednesday constitutional amendments, their tenure is now scheduled to end in the year 2023.

But to the Speaker of parliament who chaired House during the passing of the controversial Constitutional amendment bill 2017, Kadaga says the two-year extension is to enable the legislators do their mandatory role of fulfilling their pledges to their electorates.

Kadaga also underscored the achievement of the 10th Parliament in the year 2017 saying 24 laws have been enacted, 24 petitions handled, oversight functions carried out among others.

The speaker has however warned a section of legislators against their continued breach of the rules of procedure of Parliament when the House resumes from the Christmas recess

The Speaker is also concerned that that President Museveni has also failed to ascent to some of the bills exceeding 30 days as required by the Constitution.
