Kalaki District Residents Irritated By Incomplete Road Works

Residents of six villages in Ousia parish, Apapai sub-county in Kalaki district have mobilized themselves to work on an incomplete road. The residents said the District worked on the road that links villages such as Osirima, Ojolai, Oditet, and Akolodongo.

This road connects all those villages to the Anyara sub-county except for the fact that the district left out a stretch across two swamps.

The LC1 chairperson of Akolodongo village, Yolamu Ajengu, said failure to work on the swampy area made movement difficult.

‘’How do we connect to the other side when the swamp is impassible? We have been using this road, but it is the swamp which is a problem for the locals,’’ Ajengu said.

A resident, Martin Ekipu, said people especially children going to school, find it hard to cross the swamp. He added that it becomes a challenge in case a person is sick and requires hospitalization.

One of the village’s health officials, Faith Angico said she referred a pregnant mother to Apapai Health Centre III.

However, the mother gave birth from the impassible stretch at the swamp after she had failed to cross.

Due to the incomplete road, farmers fail to transport their produce from the villages to the main road due to the incomplete road.

Peter Opio, a businessman said they had to improvise logs to act as a bridge across the swamp. These made it possible for motorists to cross.

As for the Kalaki district engineering department, it shifted the blame to the sub-county. Peter Odio Oyo, the district engineer in charge of roads said he told the sub-county leadership that the funds were inadequate.

He said they could not do much apart from working within the sub-county budget. Apparently, the sub-county budget for the road totalled to about Shs.16m, whereas the swamp alone needed about Shs.40m.
