Kasese Widows Claim 250m Wasn’t Enough, They’re Demanding For More!

In November 2016, Uganda witnessed a mini or rather unsuccessful coup coming from western part of the country particularly the Rwenzururu kingdom in Kasese district where a good number of men lost their lives and left children and women ( widows ) in agony during the army raid on the Kingdom.

This attempt on the government made the army forces retaliate in a brutal manner mostly killing the Kingdom guards who were carrying Pangas and other local weapons.

After the attack, the president promised to support these affected people in getting their lives back since they had lost their loved ones.

Men died most and they are the bread winners of most families meaning widows and orphans were left to survive under harsh conditions.

Through Bukedea district woman MP, Hon Anita the president sent 250 million shillings which was delivered to the Kasese Municipality member of parliament Hon Centenary Robert who asked the money directly from the president and he happens to be from the opposition.

Such move was seen as a sell out among Hon Robert Centenary’s counterparts from his party FDC which increased more misunderstandings.

It’s believed that Hon Robert wanted to give out the cash through rightful channels urging widows to form organized SACCOs so as the money can be helpful to most of the victims.

Shs50m was assigned to 34 widows and the rest of the money went to Boda boda groups and other widows of the royal guards who are still being detained by their king Wesley Mumbere and they are close to 200 people.

It’s reportedly said that later on, each widow received Shs510,000 as capital for business, but this wasn’t received well by most of the widows protesting that the 510,000 wasn’t enough because they had other needs besides starting business, they admitted to have eaten the money and demanded to meet the president at the same time for more money.

It’s also said their municipality MP, Hon Robert Centenary denied going back to the president for more money on grounds that he was ashamed by his people and can’t even get to the president easily because of his political party.
