Makerere University Students Uncertain On Way Forward

As the country edges back into lockdown, Makerere University students have expressed uncertainty on the way forward. As of last night, President Museveni ordered the closure of a number of institutions and put some restrictions on movements.

This happened due to the surge in the number of covid-19 cases in the country especially in the areas that saw the closure.

This partial restriction will last for 42 days to determine a way forward. Some of the institutions that were swept in this wave include all schools as well as higher institutions of learning, which include universities.

A few of those, such as Kyambogo University and Makerere University Business School took this communication quite well. This is because they had already been closed and programs had already been postponed due to students having Covid-19.

However, for Makerere University, some students did not like this communication from the president very much. The University had just started off with its end-of-semester examinations and some few students had even completed their examinations.

Some other students were still in the middle of doing their papers and some others were yet to begin writing theirs.

The most notable group frustrated by this happened to be the first-year students. They complained about sitting home for almost two years. And just as they are finishing the first semester, the president has sent them home again.

The prolonged stay at home has frustrated many students. Some say they are not growing any younger.

‘’It is really sad how he (President Museveni) just locks us down. We might as well just decide to get married because however much they stop education, they cannot stop time. We are aging, and by the time we graduate, no one will want to marry us because we will be old. Even the men waiting to marry us after graduation are tired,’’ said a Sandra at Douglas Villa hostel in Kikoni.

On the other hand, though, some students were celebrating this as a win. Apparently, they didn’t prepare for the exams.

The president gave four days for students to travel back home. And as for the Muk students, they still are waiting for a communication from officials at the university to know the way forward.
