Man Evades Authorities After Forcing Son Into Flames Due To 500 Shilling Dispute Share

In the serene landscapes of Buyende in eastern Uganda, a distressing incident unfolded when a father engaged in a heated altercation with his six-year-old son, Moses Ngobi. The aftermath of the confrontation resulted in the young boy sustaining severe burns, leading to his hospitalization at Kamuli General Hospital, located in a neighboring district.

The turmoil ignited over a modest sum of 500 Shillings, as Moses, in a bid to satiate his hunger, extracted the amount from his father’s trousers. The act, intended to purchase a chapati, was part of a compassionate gesture towards his family. However, the revelation of this gesture to his father, Ivan Wambi, spiraled into a tragic turn of events due to the father’s violent reaction.

Ivan Wambi, a 34-year-old parent, was consumed by anger upon discovering the monetary transaction. In a fit of rage, he subjected his young son to physical harm, described by the child’s grandmother, Eva Nabirye, as akin to treating him like a common thief.

The altercation culminated in Moses being pushed into a charcoal stove, where scalding hot water awaited, inflicting grievous burns on the child’s delicate frame.

Legal ramifications and law enforcement response

The local authorities were promptly notified of the distressing episode, leading to the filing of a grievous bodily harm case against Wambi. Michael Kasadha, the spokesperson for Busoga North Police, denounced the father’s actions, stressing that while discipline holds significance, resorting to such violent measures was unwarranted.

He advocated for a more compassionate approach, suggesting counseling as a viable alternative to physical punishment in addressing the child’s actions.

Amidst the unfolding tragedy, Kasadha highlighted the prevalent issue of domestic violence within the district, citing a concerning 82 reported cases between January and June of the current year.

He implored parents to exercise restraint and emotional composure, particularly in interactions involving their children, urging a shift towards thoughtful responses over impulsive reactions.

The pursuit for justice continues as law enforcement endeavors to locate Wambi, who is presently evading arrest, as the community grapples with the repercussions of this heart-wrenching incident.

[dropcap]A[/dropcap] section of women in Bugongo parish and Nawangaiza parish in Nawandala Sub County, Iganga District have decried the near-impossible terms set for them to access GROW funds. They have now petitioned their woman member of parliament for Iganga Hon. Kauma Sauda Alibaawo to ask the government for revised terms and conditions. This is to enable them to benefit from the program. The disgruntled women accuse the implementers of the program of charging the money. They are also asking for their land titles and land agreements. They said that such properties are governed by their husbands. These, therefore want the government through their woman MP to intervene and revise the requirements for one to benefit. The women were on Wednesday at Namabwere primary school in Nawandala Sub County. They had gathered in their respective groups to receive over 300 chickens from Hon Alibaawo in her campaign to improve the livelihood of women in Iganga district. Each group was given 50 chicken as start-up capital in their journey to prosperity. Read what some leaders said; Ms Naigambi Lydia from Nawandala Trading Centre says, “They solicited money from us through opening bank accounts and depositing Shs80,000. They also asked for land titles and land agreements from us yet we don’t have such things. I was informed that I needed to have a business with a capital of Shs4m yet my capital was very small.” The chairperson Kisoboka Saving Group in Nawandala Ms. Nakagolo Faith said they were not able to join the program. This is given the many conditions attached. She also asked their woman MP to raise their concerns to the relevant offices. The MP condemned the mode of implementation of the program. She cited that it has turned to benefit the well-off class of women other than the intended group. She further asked the government to intervene saying the current strings attached to the programme are very tight to accommodate a common woman. GROW project is a Government of Uganda initiative that arose out of the need to respond to the needs of women entrepreneurs.
