Masaka Trashes SOPs To Show Love To Kabaka Of Buganda

A few minutes before 5 pm on Friday, Buganda Kingdom’s leader Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II’s convoy made its way into Masaka city. Upon his arrival, an aroused crowd welcomed him despite the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic.

The stop came as the Kabaka headed to his Nkoni palace in the neighbouring Lwengo district. This is where he held his 28th coronation anniversary recently.

A few days to the Kabaka’s arrival, security chiefs from Masaka city, Masaka district, and Lwengo district had announced tight security measures.

These included a ban on the construction of arches (ebiyitirirwa) along the roads fearing that masses would congregate to welcome the king.

On top of that, processions and all fanfare synonymous with the Kabaka’s tours of the kingdom were also banned. However, the orders were defied in the newly created city and further away in Kyengera and beyond.

Masses poured into the road, forcing the convoy to stop. The Kabaka’s UPDF guards tried all to control the crowd but their efforts all went in vain.

It is only when the Kabaka got out of his vehicle and walked through his ecstatic subjects that the convoy moved.

At about 11 pm, the Kabaka and his Nabagereka (queen) walked out of their newly refurbished palace without the usual fanfare.

There were at least 200 guests. Notable among them are members of the royal family, and former vice president Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi.

The leader of the opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, and Lwengo LC-V chairman Ibrahim Kitaatta were also present, among others.

With guidance, the Kabaka inspected the gifts (Amakula) that he received from his subjects. These include 21 heads of cattle, 15 goats, three rabbits, and 492 bunches of matooke, fruits, and bark cloth among other gifts.

Entertainers were denied access to the palace, however, organizers recorded school children and other groups. They then played the footage on giant screens.

To climax the celebrations, the Kabaka roasted cow meat instead of cutting a cake and served his few guests. The rest of the beef got sent to prisoners at the county jail and retired priests at Kitovu.
