Men’s Forum Against Domestic Violence Asks Museveni For Covid Relief

Men’s Forum against Domestic Violence Prevention has asked President Yoweri Museveni to provide men’s relief during this covid pandemic. This will enable them to protect families from domestic violence.

Lauben Muhanguzi the director says during last years lockdown, most men deserted their families because of unemployment and stress over money.

“My humble appeal to the president as we handle covid 19 pandemic is to provide relief for men to handle family responsibilities. Men are currently challenged with taking care of families because of unemployment,” He said.

According to Lauben, the number of domestic abuse cases countrywide skyrocketed. And men’s mistreatment by women more than doubled during the lockdown.

He was addressing the media ahead of June 21st fathers day celebrations in Kampala.

According to police crime report of 2020, domestic violence cases shot up by 29% while 40% of fathers deserted their families.

Ruth Muguta, the principal social officer ministry of gender urged men to stand with their wives during covid.

“Stop being absentee fathers. You can provide mobile money for the family and it makes a difference when you physically there to care for the family,” Muguta said.

According to the ministry of gender, Uganda loses sh 77 billion annually due to domestic violence.
