Ministry Of Gender To Increase Money Given To The Elderly

The ministry of Gender has decided to increase the money given to the elderly. The elderly have been getting 25,000/= per month but the ministry of Gender is considering increasing it to 35,000Ugshs.

This money is given to elders above the age of 80. The news came as Uganda joins the rest of the world to commemorate the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, today.

Therefore, the World Commemorates the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day every year on 15th June. This they do as an avenue to raise voices against abuses and suffering inflicted on older persons.

The theme this year is: “Stop Elder Abuse: promote Healthy and dignified ageing for National Development.”

The Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, in charge, Elderly Affairs, Dominic Mafabi Gidudu in a statement said this money has drastically changed the lives of many senior citizens.

“As of January 2022, the programme was reaching 304,046 beneficiaries across the country. The grants have had a significant impact on the lives of older persons who receive them. We think as we go along, that amount will be increased and the age will be lowered to about 70 because we have realized that money helps a lot and in life is not how much you get is what you can do with what you get,” he said.

Mafabi said, currently, the ministry is working with the offices of NIRA to see how all elderly people can have National IDs so that they access this money.
