Mpigi District Leadership Threatens To Walk To Work Over Fuel Cuts

The leadership in Mpigi District has threatened to resort to walking to work demonstrations over cuts on their fuel allowances.

On Wednesday, Ssejemba addressed journalists and said whereas leadership got enough fuel allowances in the previous term, it is currently a different story.

He said they cut the same allowance they gave in the previous term by 60%. This situation he said has crippled their work.

‘’The public should be informed that any time they see us walking to work or using Boda Bodas, they should know that we have no fuel. In order to serve them, we shall walk or use boda bodas to go to offices and return home,’’ Martin Ssejemba, Mpigi District LC5 chairman said.

He cited his predecessor who used to get an allowance of fuel of up to UGX2m. However, currently, he receives only shs 800,000.

He said the fuel for the district speaker used to be shs1m but is now shs500, 000. And that of the district secretaries that used to be shs600, 000 is now shs400, 000.

On the other hand, though, Mr. Ssejemba blamed the current situation on politics which he identifies as play between NRM and NUP.

‘’This is all in comparison to the previous NRM regimes. In the current NUP regime, incentives in the office of the district chairperson and the speaker were diffused by the office of the clerk to the district council,’’ he said.

The district leaders said despite the meager fuel allowance, reducing it even made matters worse.
