MPs Anita Among And Moses Magogo’s Marriage Woes; URSB Replies Clerk Who Annulled The Marriage

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has replied to a letter cancelling the marriage of Speaker Anita Among and Hon Moses Magogo from the town clerk of Makindye Division Urban Council, Rwakabale Geofrey.

This stated that the marriage certificate to the Speaker of Parliament, Hon Anita Among and FUFA president Eng Moses Magogo had been rescinded and withdrawn.

According to Rwakabale, he had issued the letter under duress. He however later discovered a number of errors and omissions in the details provided thus issuing the statement.

However according to URSB, the role of a town clerk is to register and transmit a return to the Registrar of Marriages at URSB.

Further, neither the town clerk nor the registrar of marriages have the authority to invalidate a marriage.

Therefore the letter from the town clerk cannot invalidate the marriage between Hon Magogo and Hon Anita Among. URSB further asked people to ignore the circulating misleading stories about the validity of this marriage.

Additionally, URSB in the released statement said that upon completion of the registration at the Sub County or Town Clerk’s office, the marriage return is filed with URSB to be entered on the National Marriage Register maintained by URSB.

The Bureau also said that customary marriage is one of the five types of legal marriages in Uganda. It is celebrated according to the rites of an African community.

Also, one of the parties to the marriage must be a member of that community.

Besides, none registration of a marriage does not invalidate it. However, registration of a marriage gives evidential value pertaining to that marriage.

It should be recalled that MP David Kabanda yesterday revealed that Rwakabale Geofrey is being used by his ‘concubine’ in government to fight the Speaker. And this turned out to be none other than State Minister for Housing, Persis Namuganza.

The issue is said to stem from the Naguru-Nakawa land. Apparently, Namuganza has been faulted for dubiously authorizing to be taken by individuals and other entities. Yet on the other hand Among has stood her ground to save it from these.
