Mubende MPs Request An Ease On Ebola Restrictions

Members of Parliament from Mubende district have appealed to the President to ease the restrictions imposed on them due to Ebola.

They asked for this because people are still just recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic as well as back-to-back lockdowns.

The legislators made the appeal yesterday at parliament while addressing the press. Among other things, they asked that at least boda boda riders should be allowed to ferry foodstuffs to the markets.

They also asked that they should be allowed to also transport children to school for studies given that some of them are even doing their UCE exams.

Despite their appeal, the legislators revealed that they are in support of the restrictions and all measures to control the disease. However, they say the restrictions should be imposed in a humane way to avoid traumatizing people.

The MP of Mubende Municipality, Hon. Bashir Lubega Sempa, said the president cleared vehicles to carry goods during Covid-19. He said this should also be the case during this epidemic.

“We are operating a boda boda economy where the biggest population is using them for survival. Many farmers and market vendors in Mubende are outside the town. Most of them use boda bodas to transport their produce to the market,” Mr Lubega said.

He added that the farmers cannot afford private vehicles to transport their produce to the markets. He, therefore, said it is useless to leave the farms open but close their only means of transportation.

“President Museveni should reconsider the ban on boda bodas,” he added.

On Saturday, President Museveni initiated a 21-day lockdown on Mubende and Kassanda districts. This is to contain the Ebola outbreak that has already claimed 19 lives.

Hon. William Museveni, the legislator of Buwekula South, said many school-going children have been using boda bodas and public means to go to school.

He asked the government to devise relief means for people whose businesses have been affected as a result of the lockdown.
