Nobert Mao Expects Highly Of The New Parliament Leadership

The Democratic Party (DP) president, Nobert Mao has said his party has nothing but high expectations from the new Parliament leadership.

On Monday, newly sworn-in members of parliament went to Kololo Airstrip to elect their new Speaker and Deputy Speakers. Jacob Oulanyah emerged as the victor for the Speaker of Parliament ad as his Deputy, they elected Anita Among.

On Tuesday, Nobert Mao addressed the press and said his Party and him have high expectations from the new leadership. He said the new leaders of parliament are expected to have both soft and hard skills if the 11th parliament is to get things done with minimum friction.

‘’The hard skills are the mastery of the roles, rules, and traditions of parliament and how to apply them. Some of the most important soft skills are how to make all members feel valued, how to build consensus and restrain in the use of powers conferred on the office, ‘’ Mao said.

He furthermore urged the new leadership to master the skill of being able to control meetings. This is because they can easily become unproductive while listening to, and respecting everyone’s views.

In addition to that, Mao said he had an opportunity to talk to both Oulanyah and Among after their respective wins and congratulated them.

He said he tried and failed to reach out to the former Speaker, Rebecca Kadaga, but he thanked her for her services to the country.

He applauded Kadaga’s networking skills that helped improve the image of the parliament worldwide. This helped make our parliament a model to be looked up to and emulated by other democracies.

Nobert Mao served in the 6th and 7th parliaments as a representative of Gulu Municipality.
