Rt Rev Benon Magezi, the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese has passed away a week after he tested positive for the coronavirus. After testing positive, Mbarara regional referral hospital admitted him but unfortunately couldn’t save his life.

The news of his death first came from the Rujumbura county MP Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi through his Facebook page at 10:15 pm on Tuesday.

He quoted the bishop’s widow, Ms. Gladyce Magezi who had been taking care of him at the hospital when he passed on.

‘’Dear brothers, it’s sad to announce the demise of Bishop Benon Magezi of North Kigezi Diocese. The wife rang me and was calm and strong, but pray for her at such a time as this,’’ Gen Muhwezi said.

On January 8, 2017, Bishop Magezi replaced Bishop Patrick Tugume Tusingwire as the 5th consecrated bishop of the North Kigezi Diocese. At the time of his death, he had a wife, Gladyce with whom they had five children.

Rev Can Enock Karamuzi, the diocesan secretary also confirmed the Bishop’s death in a phone call interview. He confirmed that the late had died of the deadly coronavirus.

He further called for God’s mercy at such a time.

The ministry of health report indicated that Uganda’s cases had soared up to 64,251 after 1,422 people tested positive in yesterday.

It also added that 25 more Ugandans had succumbed to the virus in just 24 hours. This pushed the total number of deaths to 459 since March 2020.
