North Korea’s Leader Shoes Off Daughter To The World In Rare Appearance

For the first time ever, North Korea ‘s, Kim Jong-un, has made a public appearance with his daughter, confirming long-rumored reports of her existence. Believed to be named Kim Chu-ae, the girl joined him at an inspection of the country’s largest intercontinental ballistic missile launch on Friday.

The two stood side by side as they held hands and watched the test, an action that the United States vehemently condemned.

Mr Kim leads one of the world’s most secretive states, and very little is known about his personal life. North Korea’s state news agency, KCNA, published a good number of photos showing the two chat while holding hands.

In some photos, they are seen speaking with officials and also watching the tests from a viewing deck.

A North Korean expert in Washington DC, Michael Madden, said the public appearance by Chu-ae is quite significant. He said that Mr. Kim is the third generation in his family leading North Korea.

He is showing everyone he still has a grip on power. Apparently, this could be Mr. Kim’s way of announcing “that the fourth generation of power succession is going to come through my [blood]line”. Mr. Madden said Chu-ae is about 12-13 years old. This means that she will be ready for university or military service in about four to five years.

In September, reports moved around that Chu-ae appeared in a video during the country’s Mational Day celebrations. These were, however, just speculations since the North Korean leader did not even confirm it.

Chu-ae’s existence first came to light when retired basketball star Dennis Rodman traveled to North Korea.

Mr Rodman said he had spent time with Mr Kim’s family, relaxing by the sea and had “held their baby Chu-ae”.

According to experts, Mr. Kim could have as many as three children, two girls and a boy, with Chu-ae as the oldest. But the leader is extremely secretive about his family. Even his wife Ri Sol-ju remained a secret until some time after the pair married.
