Pirates Kidnap 15 Sailors Off The Coast Of Nigeria

In an attack on the Turkish container ship Mozart, 15 sailors were kidnapped by pirates off of Nigeria’s coast. The event happened on Saturday in a very violent attack that was further from the shore than most of the previous attacks.

The pirates killed one of the sailors in the raid. Authorities have identified the victim as a citizen of Azerbaijani. The other sailors kidnapped were from Turkey. This is according to the respective governments and a crew list seen by Reuters.

Reports from the crew, family members, and security sources described a well-orchestrated attack in which armed pirates boarded the ship and breached its protective citadel. It is highly possible they had explosives.

Three sailors remain on the Mozart ship, which by Sunday evening was receiving assistance in Gabonese water off central Africa.

‘’The ship is in our waters and our sailors are assisting a few nautical miles from Port Gentil’’. Gabon’s presidency spokesperson Jessey Ella Ekogha said. He, however, didn’t provide further details on the matter.

The Liberian-flagged vessel was heading to Cape Town from Lagos when pirates attacked it in the Gulf of Guinea, 160 kilometers off Sao Tome Island on Saturday.

According to news coming in from the area, the ship’s fourth captain was sailing blindly toward Gabon with damage to the ship’s controls. Only the radar was the only functioning system.

The Pirates also beat the crew members and left the captain with an injured leg. Another  member aboard the ship had shrapnel wounds.
