Police Officers Face Suspension For Beating 63-Year-Old Lady

Busia district is on the edge after a video in which two traffic police officers allegedly physically assaulted a 63-year-old woman.

The video recording happened last month and didn’t make it to social media until this month. It shows an elderly woman being kicked by the traffic officers as she lay next to her stall by the roadside.

The victim of this police brutality has since been identified as Ms Jenipher Wambani, 63. The offenders were Mr John Muyinda and Mr Abner Nabusima. They are both attached to the traffic department of the Uganda Police Force.

“It’s true two of our officers attached to the traffic police department at Busia Central Police Station are being investigated for beating a woman who was operating a stall next to the Police Station,” Mr Mugwe, the Bukedi South Region Police Publicist said at the weekend.

He also said the two were suspended as they wait for a disciplinary trial for their misconduct described as “irregular and discreditable”.

Eyewitnesses also revealed that the police officers assaulted the lady after she attacked them with stones and hit another with a stick. Apparently, she had been protesting the brutal arrest of a bodaboda rider who the officers caused to fall off his bike.

“We saw the old woman pick stones and pelt the police officers. She also used a piece of wood to hit another on the hand. In response, the officers wrestled her to the ground. They rained kicks, blows  and slaps on her until other police officers came to her rescue,” one eyewitness said.

Other eyewitnesses said the policemen poured water on her merchandise and vandalized the structure in which she slept. However, though, Ms Wambani denied ever attacking the officers.

She said she only complained because of how they treated the bodaboda rider and they attacked her.

According to Mr. Mugwe, the policemen did not have to respond the way they did. Even though the woman attacked them first. Following the incident, Mr Mugwe urged police officers to always act professionally with self-control and respect to human rights.
