Semujju Nganda Advises Government To Open Up Schools And Churches

Hon. Semujju Nganda, the Spokesperson of Forum for Democratic Party has advised government to open churches and schools.

According to him, churches are the easiest places to observe SOPs. They can register numbers because people are cooperative. He says if other sectors can open completely, why not churches and schools?

“Places of worship must fully re-open as long as they observe the Covid-19 measures. We can even limit them to half their usual congregations. Places of worship are not just for prayers, they are traditionally relief coordination centres,” he said.

He contrasted churches and marketplaces. Market places entertain a lot of people as compared to churches. For them to operate while keeping churches closed is a mystery.

According to Semujju Nganda, they should take advantage of the fact that people trust church leaders more than state leaders.

“Government should incorporate religious leaders immediately into Covid-19 task forces from village to national level. Religious institutions should be asked and where necessary facilitated to offer counselling to people affected by the pandemic.”

The president in his speech said they should lock churches for another 60 days. As for schools, the president suggests they wait until they finish vaccination. However, Semujju has called this daydreaming.

Some church leaders were planning to come together to petition against the closure of churches. However we don’t know how far it will go.

The president was unhappy with “false prophets” misleading people.
