Simon Kaggwa Njala Proposes Reduction Of A’Level To One Year

Veteran journalist and politician, Simon Kaggwa Njala has proposed the reduction of Advanced Level of Education (A’Level) to just one year. This was in regards to the senior Four candidates who did their exams this year.

Njala argued that most of the students who sat for these exams this year are well above 18 years. It’s therefore unworthy of subjecting them to the new curriculum since it will be more of a gambling move.

An 18 year old should be entering University normally but most are still grappling with pre University education.

The NBS TV presenter therefore suggested that these students should just be subjected to one year of pre entry and then allow them to do tertiary education. According to him, UACE level is a scam.

“Majority of candidates who sat S4 this year are above 18 years. We can’t afford to make them gamble further with the new curriculum. 18 is entry age for University. Let’s just subject them to one year of pre-entry and allow them to do tertiary. A’Level is a scam,” Njala wrote.

It should be noted that the COVID-19 pandemic which happened between 2020-21 caused several lockdowns which disrupted the normal academic schedule.

In the end, learners lost two years of education and when everything normalized, they started from where they had stopped.

Most of them are now well over the age where they should be in another class. Therefore Njala’s suggestion is one that surely the academic regulators ought to give a platform.

However, it’s nearly impossible that such a suggestion will be taken into consideration by the government and respective ministries.
