Different Ugandans have taken to social media to express their frustration at the powers running Namboole Stadium after SC Villa, the Uganda Premier League champions were denied access.
It should be noted that the Jogoos are set to represent the country in the CAF Champions League for the 2024-25 season. However, they have to play in the preliminary rounds before the final tournament.
SC Villa is set to host Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank of Ethiopia this Saturday. This game has been hanging in balance, especially on where it will be played.
The State Minister for Sports, Hon Peter Ogwang had promised to negotiate between the UPDF Engineering Brigade. The army is responsible for the renovations, and the club to see that the game is played there. However, it’s now been confirmed that the game won’t be played there.
“Namboole Stadium will not be available for Sports Club Villa’s match against Commercial Bank of Ethiopia in the Caf Champions League preliminaries,” reported UBC TV.
The reason given is that there is unfinished business and the running track is still wet. The UPDF project engineer, Lt Col Eng Peter Seku Kidemuka said that maybe if the players are dropped onto the playing turf by a chopper.
This leaves the game hanging in balance. Nakivubo which was renovated by tycoon Ham Kiggundu is not accredited to host CAF matches.
It apparently doesn’t meet the required standard. The only probable option is Vipers St Mary’s Kitende stadium which also might not be accepted by CAF.
