Ugandans Have The Right To Protest, Democratic Party Emphasizes

The Democratic party has emphasized the fact that Ugandans have the right to protest on matters they are not satisfied with. This came after the NUP President, Robert Kyagulanyi called for peaceful demonstration countrywide. This he said is in a bid to express dissatisfaction in the recently completed elections that paraded Museveni as the winner.

Okoler Opio Lo Amanu, the Democratic Party spokesperson, in a statement, said the constitution gives provision for Ugandans to protest.

“But there is a need for sensitisation of law enforcement officers on their obligations as per the law in facilitating people’s right to protest. In Uganda, law enforcement officers are more vigilant in blocking the exercise of the right to assemble and protest. Yet they’re supposed to facilitate the right to protest.”

However, Okoler said we’ve never had a demonstration that police has never intervened and this is not different.

“Police frequently disperses peaceful protesters with tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons and live bullets. Worse still is that the police focus not on de-escalation and isolation of violence. But rather the use of force against unarmed and peaceful protesters,” he noted.

How far will this go.

Much as this is so, we are waiting for how far this will go. Because even NUP is not willing to back down on their plan. Bobi Wine upon withdrawing his election petition called on Ugandans to rise up in peaceful protests against what he called “regime oppression”.

The 39-year-old was speaking beside a table piled high with files. He also claimed these files contained results forms from individual polling stations. He said based on these results, he was the real winner with 54 percent of the vote. Newslex Point has not yet been able to verify the evidence he presented.
