UPDF Commences Oxygen Production For State-Run Hospitals

The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) has started to manufacture oxygen for state-run hospitals that are rapidly using up what they have. They have also started manufacturing face masks and all this is to help tackle the deteriorating Coronavirus situation in the country.

According to the UPDF, the army’s commercial arm, National Enterprises Corporation (NEC) will be doing the production.

‘’We are delighted to inform Ugandans that we now produce medical masks and oxygen at Luwero Industries in Nakasongola to mitigate the spread of deadly Covid-19 virus,’’ NEC said over the weekend.

After the government and other health experts advised everyone to keep following the SOPs, the force decided to start producing masks. As for the production of oxygen, it comes at a time when the country seems to have run out of oxygen supply.

Most government and private health facilities in various parts of the country have reported having run out of medical oxygen. This is due to the rapidly increasing number of patients in need of these services that has doubled in the past few weeks.

The managing director of the NEC, Lt Gen James Mugira said that the enterprise is responding to the current situation of scarcity of medical oxygen. This is going to be done through supporting strategic sectors other than just the military.

He further explained that they are currently producing 12 oxygen cylinders per hour, each weighing 50 kilos.

He also assured the country that the National Drug Authority certified their products finding the oxygen to be 99.9% pure, describing it as the purest product in the country.
