WHO Approves Chinese Covid-19 Vaccine

On Friday, the World Health Organization approved the first-ever covid-19 vaccine from China in a bid to boost the global immunization drives.

This happened as India recorded yet another record number of infections that have even spread to neighboring countries.

While many western countries start to reopen as vaccinations gain pace, authorities in Tokyo and other parts of Japan have extended virus states of emergency. This comes just under three months to the Olympics.

In Geneva, WHO approved for emergency use of the Sinopharm vaccine. This is the first fully non-Western vaccine to get a green light and build up the global arsenal against the virus.

‘’The number of cases, the number of deaths globally is on the increase. We will see serious situations like what we see now in India, in Brazil,’’ WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom warned.

Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson have already received emergency use listing from WHO.

The AstraZeneca jab being produced at separate sites in India and South Korea also got listed for emergency use. These are all efforts to speed up the vaccination process.

Listing paves the way for all countries worldwide to quickly approve and import a vaccine for distribution.

In another move, the listing of vaccines has enabled it to join the Covax global vaccine-sharing scheme. This scheme aims at providing equitable access around the world and particularly in poorer countries.
