100 Senior House Officers Resuming Work Today

Up to 100 senior house officers will resume work today following a suspension of their industrial action by the Uganda Medical Association General Assembly.

The strike had entered its 14th day yesterday and it happened in protest of delayed payment of monthly allowances. The senior officers said this among other grievances led them to hold the strike but will be expected in office today.

The Medical Association General Assembly agreed that they would suspend the strike for 30 days. It said this move will create a way for engagement with stakeholders to discuss and implement recommendations. Apparently, these recommendations were made to provide for short and long term solutions.

The President of the Senior House Officers, Dr. Robert Lubega held a press conference yesterday. During this, he told journalists that the annual general meeting will propose recommendations for government consideration within these 30 days.

These recommendations include formulation of the National Health Workforce Planning Committee. This is as the president directed in June 1st, 2021.

Another recommendation involved close collaboration between the health and finance ministries. This would ensure availability of resources to pay all senior house officers.
