APSA Conference 2023 Gets Underway

Uganda Retirement Regulatory Authority (URBRA) is hosting the Annual Pension Supervisors Association also called APSA conference with other stakeholders.

This is apparently because a lot needs to be done in regards to the pension sector despite the evident great progress that have been achieved thus far.

The two-day engagement kicked off on Monday September 27, 2023 in Kampala, Uganda. It is aimed at promoting Sustainable Pension Inclusion in Africa through sharing knowledge, experiences, innovations, and avenues from different experts.

Hon. Julius Junjura Bigirwa, Chairperson of URBRA, in his opening remarks, said it’s an opportunity for Uganda to host the APSA conference.

He said the various stakeholders coming together is important to shape the future of the Pension Sector in the country.

Mr Augustine Kpehe, Country Director African Development Bank emphasized the need for Sustainable inclusion.

This is because a pension provides a reliable income for life in the future. Apparently, advances in public health, nutrition, education among others have led to a shift according to him. This means that life expectancy has increased meaning pensioners might survive for about 20 years yet most are broke.

“Pensions must be progressive and reliable in order to have all people with the right policies. This is to make sure that those that are excluded like the youth and the informal sector are brought on board. This is through policies by the government such; as digitalization, massive awareness campaigns as tools to attract those left behind. Africa is a young continent and 9- 10 percent will be 60 years by 2050. Stories show that the trend we are taking needs a lot of work to do,” he said.

He affirmed their readiness to draw the sector through capacity building whenever they are called upon. Other keynote speakers also included Parul Seth Kharma, CEO,  Pin Box Solutions, Hon. Julius Junjura Bigirwa, Chairperson, URBRA among others.
