Ecuador Elects Its Youngest President Ever

Daniel Noboa, a businessman has been elected president of Ecuador, becoming the youngest president in the country’s history at 35 years. Mr. Noboa won Sunday’s election with a 52.3% margin of the votes beating his rival Luisa González’s 47.7% margin.

She conceded defeat and congratulated her rival on his victory.

The 35-year-old, of the National Democratic Action party is a son to Àlvaro Noboa. Álvaro ran for office five different times, coming out unsuccessful on all runs.

Daniel Noboa will be in office for the next 17 months until the next election. His government will be in power from starting end of November 2023 to May 2025.

The current election happened after outgoing President Guillermo Lasso dissolved parliament amid an impeachment trial.

Noboa will be able to run for the presidency again for the 2025-29 presidential term if he wishes to. His swearing-in as president will be on November 25, five days prior to his 36th birthday.

“Tomorrow we start work for this new Ecuador, we start working to rebuild a country seriously battered by violence, by corruption and by hate,” he told his supporters following his victory.

Gang violence has been on the rise in Ecuador in recent years in addition to violent crimes. The country has also become a hub for drug gangs due to its location between Colombia and Peru. These are the two top cocaine producers in the world.
