Gov’t Asked To Register Firearms Afresh

Uganda People’s Congress(UPC), an opposition political party has hinted at the looming danger of firearms in the wrong hands. This is in relation to the recent shootings that have been happening in the country.

Consequently, the party asked the government to do a fresh re-registration of all firearms in the country. According to them, this will help in toning down the rising gun violence in the country.

There have been several incidents involving security guards killing people or each other around the country. The most recent incident happened in Toroto yesterday where a security guard shot dead his colleague.

UPC spokesperson, Sharon Oyat, recently addressed the press at the party’s headquarters in Kampala. She said the government should also consider beefing up measures on issuance of firearms.

In addition to that, Oyat called upon external entities to interfere diplomatically in areas like Sudan, Somalia, DR Congo, among others. She said these areas have permeable borders that attract the trafficking of firearms increasing levels of insecurity.

She added saying stakeholders and the government should create maximum awareness in relation to customary inheritance laws. This will help avoid rampant family and clan violence.

There have been numerous shootings across the country in the last few weeks. From the shooting of the State Minster of Gender, Labour and social development, popular vlogger Isma Olaxess, all in Kyanja.

To the shooting of an Indian national by a police officer in downtown Kampala, just near Parliament. Along with other shootings involving security guards in Kampala and Tororo.
