Health Worker Arrested For Raping Pregnant Woman In Hospital

Darius Orikiriza, a 38-year-old health worker from Rukiga district has been arrested by the territorial police. The Mparo Health Centre IV enrolled nurse is accused of allegedly raping a 20-year-old pregnant woman.

The 38-year-old is a resident at the health Centre quarters in Mparo town council in Rukiga district. The victim of his alleged crime has been identified as 20-year-old Elizabeth Orishaba, a resident of Maaya Cell, also in Rukiga district.

ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, the incident happened on 21 August, 2023.

Apparently, the victim, currently in her 7th month of pregnancy went to the health facility for a medical examination.

She then got referred to the scanning department that the now suspect had been operating at the time.

Maate added that upon her arrival, he directed her to take her clothes off and accordingly forced her into carnal knowledge.

The victim said she thereafter informed those in charge who later informed the police for further management.

Detectives were dispatched to the scene of the crime led by the District Police Commander and OC CID. They documented the scene, arrested the health worker and obtained swabs from both the victim and the suspect.

Police later recorded a case of rape at Rukiga Central Police Station under file number CRB 361/2023. Maate also confirmed that inquiries into the matter are still ongoing.
