The police in Oyam District have in their custody 15 suspects in relation to the chaos reported to have happened in the parliamentary by-election. The Kyoga region police spokesperson, Jimmy Patrick Okema said some of the people in this group included some motorcycle riders.

These apparently happened to be escorting the ballot boxes to the polling stations.

He said in addition to the 15 individuals arrested, 14 motorcycles also got impounded. Their release is pending until the election exercise is concluded.

Other people got arrested for alleged voter bribery as well as intimidation throughout the election exercise.

Opposition party Uganda Peoples Congress candidate, Dr Eunice Apio won the hotly contested by-election.

She fetched 15,718 of the total cast votes representing 49% and consequently got declared the winner. As for her closest challenger, Samuel Engola Jr of the ruling NRM party, he had 15,176 votes (47%).

The vacancy of the Oyam North seat happened when former labour state minister Col Charles Engola died. He apparently got shot dead by his bodyguard at his home in Kyanja a Kampala on May 2.

The others in the race were Daniel Okello of the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Newton Freddy Okello of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
