Bangladesh Train Collision Leaves 17 Dead

At least 17 people lost their lives while others sustained injuries after a collision involving two trains in eastern Bangladesh. Apparently, a freighter train slammed into the rear coaches of a passenger train in Bhairab.

The accident happened 80km (50 mile) north-east of Dhaka on Monday afternoon.

Initial investigations revealed that a signal error is likely to have caused the collision of the train, according to an anonymous source.

In Bangladesh, train wrecks are common as a result of poor infrastructural development. Onboard the Egarsindhur Twilight passenger train, 14 people died on spot after Monday’s collision that forced three carriages to overturn. At least two coaches were smashed.

“Many people got trapped inside after the collision. Most of the people died on the spot,” the chief of the local fire service, Mohammad Masud, told reporters.

Three other people died after arriving at the hospital where about 50 others are being treated after sustaining injuries. It is suspected that the death toll could rise as rescue efforts are still ongoing.

Authorities have launched a formal investigation to ascertain what could have caused the collision. Besides the signal error, poor track conditions and unsupervised rail crossing have been blamed for past accidents.

In April, several people were injured when a Dhaka-bound passenger train collided with a freighter train in Comilla. They also blamed that accident on a signal error.
