Ipswich Town Captain Sam Morsy Comes Under Criticism From LGBTQ Activists For Refusing To Wear Gay Armband

English Premier League side Ipswich Town’s captain, Sam Morsy has come under heavy criticism from LGBTQ activists. This is after he refused to wear a gay armband. The Premier League over the weekend in their campaign to promote ‘inclusion’ revealed that the rainbow flag would be portrayed at stadiums and the armbands worn by club captains would be in the LGBTQ flags.

However, Sam Morsy was the only one out of the 20 club captains who did not wear the armband opting for the normal one. Ipswich came out and revealed that he had chosen not to because of his religious beliefs. The club was fully in support of him. Apparently, the footballer is a practicing Muslim.

As soon as this gained traction on social media, different opinions started coming in. Whereas some immensely respected and supported his decision, others have taken to lambasting him.

They accuse him of being homophobic in the guise of religion. This is yet he wears shirts that have betting companies as team sponsors yet gambling is against his religion too.

“This is nonsense of course, because he’ll wear a shirt advertising a gambling company. And if we are being absolutely strict, he’ll wear shorts! So he’s just being bigoted and expecting the club to defend him for his bigoted views,” said one comment.

“Pathetic from Sam Morsy. As others have pointed out he will happily wear betting sponsorships on his shirt. Just say you’re homophobic and move on. Stop using your religion as a scapegoat for your homophobia,” another said.

It’s not clear if he will receive any sort of punishment, especially from the Premier League.
