“My Life Is In Danger” – Lady In Latvian Tourist Rape Saga Fears For Her Life

A lady, identified as Sumaya Uwiragiye, who claims she helped a Latvian national break the silence about her rape at the hands of a flamboyant Ugandan pastor, says her life is in danger.

Ms Sumaya says she has now decided to lock her wine shop and restaurant at Lukuli Nanganda in Makindye Division. This is after Ms Saulite Anda spoke exclusively to NMG Uganda about her rape predicament.

Ms Anda, 36, accused a pastor of a local church, Epikaizo Ministries, Mr. Joseph Collins Twahirwa of raping her. This was during her first night in Uganda on December 11, 2022. The accused was consequently remanded to Luzira prison as investigations into the allegations continue.

Now, however, Ms. Uwiragiye, 32, who helped Ms. Anda tell her story to NMG Uganda, suspects she is being trailed by Mr Twahirwa’s emissaries.

“There is a man who first helped the lady report the matter at Jinja Road Police Station. On the day when NTV ran the story, he came to say the pastor is ready to pay me whatever money I want so as to stop following that matter. this is because it seems things are getting out of hand,” Ms Uwiragiye said in an interview on Sunday.

She told this Daily Monitor that the unidentified man didn’t take no for an answer. On January 15, she was reportedly trailed by men on two motorcycles. This was as Ms Uwiragiye returned home with her sister.

“I have been forced to close the restaurant since January 15 because I do not know these people and their intentions,” she revealed.

“They can easily kill me. I do not know who they are. I suspect these are followers of the pastor who are not pleased that he was remanded to prison.”

[dropcap]P[/dropcap]resident Yoweri Museveni is reportedly disturbed by the high number of cases of land grabbing involving officials from the State House and the Office of the President. This was revealed on Friday by Ms Phiona Barungi, the State House Special Assistant on General Duties while meeting land-grabbing victims in Luwero district. Barungi said the president had been lately overwhelmed by complaints about State House officials tormenting scores of people, especially in central Uganda. “There’s just too many complaints about State House employees,” she said. “We have become a big problem, even the president himself, who gave us these jobs is concerned… He does not know what to do.” “He sent us to serve the people but we are now serving our stomachs. It has gotten to a point where almost every state house official is involved in a land wrangle somewhere.” In a meeting held in Zirobwe village in Bukyimu sub-county in Bamunakika, Barungi said her office was being bombarded daily by helpless people. Some of these are facing death threats from powerful people. “Yesterday I had just landed from Turkey, I even was feeling sick. I found a man at the airport waiting for me,” Barungi told the meeting. “He told me that a man connected to Gen Muhoozi Kairerugaba was hunting him to kill him and take his land. When I asked around, it turned out that this man has no connection to Gen Muhoozi. He is just a serial land grabber.” In the meeting, the residents singled out a number of people who have been harassing them. These also went ahead destroying their crop gardens, and metting out all manner of violence to force them out of their land. The Minister of Lands Hon Sam Mayanja during the meeting ordered an immediate arrest of two of these land grabbers. They include Mary Babirye and Rasmus Kagaba.
