Rukungiri Accidents See 4 Motorists Dying In A Week

On November 26th, 2023, an accident occurred at Rusheshe Trading Centre, along Rukungiri-Mitoma Road in Rukungiri District. One person died on the spot and three others sustained injuries.

The Kigezi Regional Police spokesman, ASP Elly Maate said the accident involved two motorcycles. One of them belonged to Mubangizi Peter, 29, who died while being transported to hospital.

Apparently, the others involved were Owembabazi Daniel 27, and Tumijuka Ivan male adult (rider). However, the other passenger involved in the accident had not been identified by press time.

Maate revealed that one of the riders traveling from Rukunjiri side lost control of his motorcycle and crossed to the right-hand lane. From there, he collided head-on with the second rider who was riding in the opposite direction.

Both riders and their passengers fell down sustaining fatal injuries, later being rushed to hospital where one of the riders died on the way.

“The scene was visited and documented by Cpl oketayot and the team. Both motor cycles parked at Police yard pending inspection” added Maate.

This accident also brought the total number of accident-related deaths to four in just one week. It all started with an accident on 22nd November that involved a motorcycle and a bus owned by Highway Coaches.

Apparently, the bus headed to Kanungu from Kampala swept a rider and killed him instantly while trying to dodge a pothole.

The other accident also occurred on November 23 in Rwengiri village in Kanungu district. These were being ridden by the deceased Baganda Julius, 50, and the deceased Barnabas Niwebyona 40. Both riders happened to be residents of Rukunjiri.
