Faruk Kirunda the deputy spokesperson of the State House has given his opinion about the current ongoing trial of Dr. Col. Kiiza Besigye. He said that Besigye should beg for a presidential pardon just like all other political prisoners.
Apparently, Dr. KB as he’s famously known is set to appear at the Court Martial on the 7th of December.
Kirunda has now implored the legal team and supporters of the former FDC president to prepare. This is so that they can secure his bail. He advised them to use the constitution to the best of their abilities rather than placing blame on the Court Martial.
He faulted them for accusing the Court Martial of being politically biased yet it’s legally carrying out its responsibilities.
Faruk Kirunda added that this Court has successfully tried political prisoners in the past. Therefore, Besigye’s team won’t succeed in their political smearing campaign against the Court situated in Makindye.
Read his statement below;
“The legal team and supporters of Dr. Kizza Besigye should prepare well to secure for him bail at his next appearance as per the Constitution and through the established process. Questioning the legal jurisdiction of the Court Martial politically when it’s fully functional, trying different suspects on various charges, doesn’t alleviate his burden at this time. He would also be eligible for a Presidential pardon like others who have benefitted before, again under established procedures. FK.”
It should be noted that Besigye is being accused of possession of firearms. In addition to this, they also say he is working with foreign agents to destabilize the country.
His legal team is now trying to unleash a legal team of over 50 lawyers from across the continent. They will be led by former Kenyan Justice Minister, Author and politician, Martha Karua.
